Why Positive Affirmations Sometimes Don't Create Lasting Change

Difference between affirmation and releasing and healing

Why Positive Affirmations Sometimes Don't Create Lasting Change

“I've repeated the affirmations every day… so why do I still feel the same?”

It's a question many people quietly ask themselves.

Perhaps you've stood in front of the mirror saying, “I am worthy.”

You may have repeated:

  • I am enough.
  • I am abundant.
  • I am confident.
  • I am loved.

For a few moments, those words may feel uplifting.

Yet later that day, something happens.

A conversation triggers self-doubt. Someone rejects your idea. An unexpected bill arrives. A relationship mirrors an old wound.

Suddenly the affirmation disappears beneath a familiar emotional reaction.

So what happened?

The mind can say yes while something deeper says no

Affirmations work by introducing a new, intentional way of thinking.

They encourage us to focus on what we wish to cultivate rather than what we fear.

For many people, this can be genuinely helpful. Positive self-talk can support motivation, confidence and emotional wellbeing.

But there are times when affirmations seem to stay at the surface because they are being layered over experiences, beliefs or emotional patterns that haven't yet been explored.

Imagine planting beautiful flowers in soil that's compacted and full of stones.

The flowers aren't the problem.

The soil simply needs attention first.

The Living Spiral™ takes a different starting point

Rather than beginning with “What should I believe instead?”, The Living Spiral™ asks:

“What is happening underneath this experience?”

Instead of trying to replace thoughts immediately, the process encourages curiosity.

Questions become more important than statements.

  • Why does this situation keep repeating?
  • What am I reacting to?
  • Is this belief still serving me?
  • What have I learned from this experience?
  • What am I now ready to let go of?

The goal isn't to fight the old pattern.

It's to understand it.

Releasing isn't about forgetting

People often imagine releasing means pretending something never happened.

It doesn't.

Releasing is about changing your relationship with an experience.

You may still remember it.

But it no longer carries the same emotional weight.

The memory remains. The charge begins to soften.

Integration is different from erasing

Real growth isn't always about removing parts of ourselves.

Sometimes it's about recognising that every experience has shaped us.

Integration means allowing difficult experiences to become part of our understanding without allowing them to define our identity.

Instead of asking “How do I stop feeling this?”, the question becomes:

“What is this experience asking me to understand?”

Why both approaches can work together

This isn't about affirmations versus inner work.

They don't have to compete.

Affirmations can be incredibly powerful after you've explored and understood the patterns that keep pulling you back.

When the inner conflict begins to soften, positive statements often feel less like something you're trying to convince yourself of and more like something that naturally reflects how you already feel.

The words stop feeling forced.

They begin to feel true.

The Living Spiral™ approach

The Living Spiral™ isn't built around trying to think differently overnight.

It's built around developing awareness.

Through guided self-enquiry, reflective questions and structured exploration, the process encourages you to examine recurring patterns, emotional responses and life experiences with curiosity rather than judgement.

As understanding grows, many people find that their perspective begins to shift — not because they have forced themselves to think differently, but because they have made sense of something that once felt confusing.

Sometimes lasting change doesn't begin with finding better words.

Sometimes it begins with asking a better question.

Perhaps transformation isn't about becoming someone new.

Perhaps it's about understanding yourself deeply enough that who you truly are no longer has to fight to be heard.
